Overview

MonkeyMan's Tree Service is a professional tree-care company. Behind its public website is a platform that supports customer lead flows, service operations, payments and internal workflows.

I work on the backend: the APIs, business logic and payment integrations the rest of the platform relies on.

The problem

Leads, service work, payments and internal processes all run through the platform, so the backend has to handle them reliably in production, including payment onboarding through Stripe Connect.

My role

What I did

  • Developed and maintained backend APIs and business logic for customer, service and operational workflows.
  • Implemented and maintained payment functionality, including Stripe Connect integrations and onboarding flows.
  • Built and maintained backend functionality for lead and service-processing workflows.
  • Implemented features, troubleshot production issues and maintained existing functionality across Node.js/Express and MongoDB.
  • Worked with the frontend team to connect backend APIs to user-facing workflows.

What the wider team did

  • Frontend development and UI/UX implementation.
  • Other application features.

Technical approach

The React frontend calls a Node.js/Express API backed by MongoDB, which runs the business workflows for customers, services and operations.

Payments go through Stripe Connect: the backend handles onboarding and payment requests, and processes webhook events as part of the payment flow.

Text version of the diagram

A React frontend calls a Node.js/Express API. The API runs business workflows that read and write MongoDB, and works with Stripe Connect for onboarding and payments; Stripe's webhook events are handled by the backend and fed back into the workflows.

  • React frontend → Node.js / Express API: REST
  • Node.js / Express API → Stripe Connect
  • Stripe Connect → Webhook handlers: events
  • Webhook handlers → Business workflows
  • Node.js / Express API → Business workflows
  • Business workflows → MongoDB

Challenges and solutions

Stripe Connect onboarding in production

Challenge: A production Stripe Connect onboarding and configuration issue meant tracing the live payment configuration and the backend integration behind it.

Solution: The configuration was corrected so the production onboarding flow used the appropriate live setup.

Outcome

  • Live production system supporting MonkeyMan's Tree Service operations.
