- Cross-functional development team working on an AI-powered health and wellness platform

Overview
NuPath AI is an AI-powered health and wellness platform. It connects personalized AI experiences, health-related data and digital tools within one application ecosystem.
I worked on backend and application functionality, on connecting application data with backend services, on the data and analytics workflows, and on the React Native/Expo mobile app.
The problem
Analytics on health-related data has to be useful without compromising privacy. Insights must respect who is allowed to see what, and must never make an individual identifiable.
My role
What I did
- Worked on backend and application functionality supporting NuPath AI's health and wellness platform.
- Contributed to integrating application data and backend services to support personalized user experiences.
- Worked with Firebase and cloud infrastructure to support application services and analytics.
- Contributed to data processing and analytics workflows involving MongoDB and BigQuery.
- Worked on role-based access controls and privacy-conscious data handling for analytics, including k-anonymity safeguards.
- Contributed to the React Native/Expo mobile app and its integration with backend services.
What the wider team did
- Product development and AI-enabled features.
- Mobile application functionality.
- Infrastructure and other platform components.
Technical approach
The React Native/Expo mobile app calls backend APIs and application services, which store application data in MongoDB. Firebase supports application services and analytics.
Cohort data from MongoDB feeds an analytics pipeline in Google BigQuery, protected by role-based access controls and k-anonymity safeguards.
Architecture and integrations
Text version of the diagram
The React Native and Expo mobile app calls backend APIs and application services, some of which run on Google Cloud Run, and these store application data in MongoDB. The app also uses Firebase for application services and analytics. Cohort data from MongoDB feeds an analytics pipeline in Google BigQuery, whose results are protected by role-based access controls and k-anonymity safeguards.
- Mobile app → Firebase
- Mobile app → Backend APIs & services
- Backend APIs & services → Application data
- Application data → Analytics pipeline: cohorts
- Analytics pipeline → Privacy safeguards
Challenges and solutions
Useful analytics without exposing individuals
Challenge: Analytics on health-related data had to give useful insights while respecting privacy and access restrictions.
Solution: The analytics workflow uses role-based access controls and k-anonymity safeguards, including suppressing cohort results with fewer than five members. A proposed third-party analytics integration was paused while business associate agreement (BAA) and consent requirements were considered.
Outcome
- Contributed to the development of NuPath AI's mobile application, cloud services, and privacy-conscious data and analytics infrastructure.
